Efficacy of Training Projects

by: Suneet Mitra

The most frustrating times, as a Trainer, during my career have been to see the End-Deliverables of the Training Initiatives being literally torn to pieces over the last High Tea....this is what the delegates have told me quite often "Your Inputs/Concepts/Model/Techniques/Strategy is fantastic but I am sorry to say this is not going to help much for our bosses would tell us "outing/Fun is over now get back to work and do what I tell you" Any Trainer who has put his heart and Soul in the Training Intervention would feel so let down simply because organizations fail to provide the conducive environment for implementation of the new learnings. In other words more often than not its the Top Management which fails to UNLEARN N RELEARN.......

In my experience, assuming Training workshops have been executed well, the efficacy of any Training programme is directly co-related to the following critical factor :

-The Will of the Top Management to get the End Deliverables Implemented

Unlike the manufacturing set up, wherein a percentage change in rejection or quality makes tangible changes in the balance sheet, the service Industry's Top Managements shall not see a dramatic change in the numbers in their balance sheet instantaneously. This makes them perhaps turn their attention towards other pressing issues, which by the way could be a direct result of not paying attention to the Training Initiatives.

To ensure that End Deliverables are implemented a regular intervention of the Top Management must be ensured at strategic stages of the training project. This would be feasible only if the changes, brought about by Training Initiatives, could be quantified.

To conclude Training Interventions without a Top Management's Representative-who can take decisions and ensure policy changes if required is as good as a car without an engine or a body without a soul.

Keep Smiling...
