Five Easy Tips on How to Overcome Writer's Block

by: earl stringer

Writing plays a huge part in a lot of peoples everyday lives and careers. With that being said, many run into a "blank state" so to speak, or something better known as writers block. This article will a take a look at five tips that can get someone dealing with writers block back on track and writing smoothly.

A lot of people make a living writing books, web copy, business emails or perhaps even articles. Anyone that writes on a regular basis will probably, at some point ad time, get writers block. This can be a real drag, but there are a few things that you can do to help you get over this frustrating problem.

Listed below are five things you can do to help you get over writers block. One if not all of these tips should get the job done.

Watch TV - This sounds easy but watching tv can trigger a new idea or it can be used to get your mind off of your work. Sometimes just givig your mind a breaks will trigger new ideas. I could not even tell you how many times that has happeed to me. I get frustrated, so I walk away form my work for a little bit and find something else to do; then suddenly, right in the middle of it all, I get the idea or answer I was looking for!

Read A Book - This can put new information in your head leading to new material that can be used by you in your writing. Reading is just as important as writing. Reading helps you use your imagination, sometimes without even realizing it. How many times have you been reading something, and the scene or story starts to come alive in your mind. You start to imagine what the room looked like, how cold it must have been outside, or what the characters looked like..

Take A Nap - Taking a nap can refresh the body as well as the brain. A half hour to an hour nap could be the difference maker when it comes to getting out of a writing slump. Sometimes your brain is just on overload and needs some time to relax and refresh.

Be Someone Else - What I mean by this is to put yourself in the shoes of someone related to what you are writing about. Look through the eyes of the athlete you are writing about or turn into one of the characters in your novel that you are creating. Using this method can spark some new inspiration. Think outside the box, get lost in your own imagination, amaze yourself.

Ask People Their Opinion - Why not ask family, friends or even a fellow colleague for an opinion. They may be able to provide some useful input on whatever you are writing about. Asking someone elses opinion can be just the thing you need to defeat writers block.

These are just a few of the things that I use to overcome writers block, they may work for you also; however, do not be afraid to try your own techniques. There are thousands of methods out there, do not be afraid to get creative with it.

Good Luck.
